What This Volume is About
This project emerges from a growing conviction that we’re approaching a fourth phase of AI in education:
- AI Outside the Curriculum— Students use AI to complete work outside sanctioned learning environments. This is where most institutions still are.
- AI In the Curriculum — Educators attempt to integrate AI into existing assignments or activities.
- AI As the Curriculum — Learning begins to happen inside AI-native platforms (e.g., Canvas + OpenAI).
- AI Under the Curriculum — AI becomes ambient. It is no longer a topic of integration—it’s a condition of cognition.
We no longer say, "we're doing internet learning" or "this is a PowerPoint-based course." Likewise, in this phase, it makes no sense to center AI as novelty. Instead, AI becomes the assumed substrate of thinking, learning, and knowing.
This volume situates itself in the realities of today while writing into that fourth phase.
